Rooting is completely up to you. I prefer to root my phones to remove bloat and customize through ROMs and such. Keep in mind rooting may void your warranty (if you still have one in place.)

The razrblade root method is very easy though.

Personal choice and entirely up to you. Many people will scoff and say you need to root or you are not using your device to it's fullest potential. Blah to that. No need to root unless you have a reason to root. Don't do it just to do it or just to say you did.

The reason I root is strictly to be able to back-up and restore my apps and their associated data. Used to be for running ad blockers but Google put a nix on that. I no longer flash ROMS or do any heavy mods so no need to even flash a custom recovery for me.

Yes it can. You can either download the utility here http://www.razrforums.com/forum/droid-razr-jb-development/3260-droid-razr-utility-xt912-jellybean-windows-mac-linux-all-one.html#post37042 to have for reference and just use the root option.

Or you can just download the razrblade.zip here

No reason your SD card should have been wiped doing an FDR. But at any rate I always make it a point to remove my SD card when doing an FDR or taking any update. I also back up anything n the internal memory that I don't want to lose.
